Bookkeeping, GST compliance, TDS compliance and MIS reporting — the difference

Bookkeeping

The recording of every business transaction — sales, purchases, payments, receipts — into your accounting system, reconciled with your bank and ledgers. Foundation of everything else.

GST compliance

The filing of monthly and annual GST returns (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B, GSTR-9), reconciliation of input credit against GSTR-2B, and correct classification of every transaction. Deadline-driven and penalty-prone.

TDS compliance

The deduction of tax at source on eligible payments, monthly deposit with the government, and quarterly return filing (24Q for salary, 26Q for others). Errors here trigger notices and interest.

MIS reporting

The interpretation layer — a monthly management pack that turns raw books into decisions (margin trends, cash runway, receivable ageing, cost variance). None of the above give you this by default.

Why running one is not enough

  • You can have clean books and still miss a GST deadline.
  • You can be GST-current and still have no cash-flow visibility.
  • You can file every TDS return correctly and still be surprised by month-end.
